Zoom Participants With a Profile Picture
Camera-off participants normally show as a black rectangle with a name. Profile-picture participants display an avatar instead, so gallery view looks like a room of real people rather than a wall of empty tiles.
What makes these different
A standard participant joins with the camera off and no avatar, which Zoom renders as a dark tile. A profile-picture participant carries an image on its account, so Zoom shows that image in both gallery and speaker view.
This matters most when the meeting is being recorded, screenshotted, or shown on a shared screen, where a grid of blank tiles is obvious.

When to choose profile-picture over standard
Standard participants are cheaper, so pick based on visibility:

How gallery view changes the maths
Zoom's gallery shows up to 25 tiles per page by default, and 49 on a machine that supports it. Only the first page is visible at a glance, so the tiles that decide the impression are the first 25. Filling those with avatars and leaving the remainder as standard participants gives most of the visual benefit at a fraction of the cost.
Speaker view behaves differently again: it shows the active speaker large with a filmstrip above. If your session spends most of its time in speaker view, the filmstrip is what people see, and a smaller number of avatars is enough. Choose the mix based on which view your audience will actually be looking at during the session.

What these participants do and do not do
They join with the camera off and the microphone muted, display their avatar and name, and stay for the duration you set. They do not speak, share a screen, or type in chat unless you separately enable reactions.
Because they are ordinary web-client participants, they appear in the participant list and in any recording of the session exactly as a real camera-off attendee would. Nothing marks them out in the interface.
